BuzzFeed prepares to make its mark in China with Bytedance content agreement

BuzzFeedBuzzFeed has linked up with Bytedance, a Chinese AI-powered content platform, to help the US publisher make its mark in China.

The content licensing agreement will see BuzzFeed’s content from across its portfolio – including Tasty, Nifty, Goodful, Top Knot, and Bring Me – distributed to Bytedance-owned platforms like Toutiao, TopBuzz, and Xigua Video in China, Japan, and elsewhere.

“We’re so pleased to partner with Bytedance to take our entertainment content to millions of people across China,” said Scott Lamb, VP of BuzzFeed International. “We look forward to meaningfully engaging Chinese audiences in our feedback loop, to learn more about what they love, how they use and interact with our content and what they’d like to see, and we’re thrilled about this first foray into testing our content there.”

Last year, Bytedance’s Toutiao acquired video and photo slideshow app Flipagram with the aim of expanding its footprint in the US, while Bytedance itself purchased social video app Musical.ly.
