Travel firm Celebrity Cruises has partnered with mixed reality agency Trigger to introduce a new augmented reality (AR) experience to its newest ship, the Celebrity Edge. The Celebrity Edge Access Tour app gives guests a private tour of the vessel from Royal Caribbean Cruises CEO and chairman Richard Fain and Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, CEO and president of Celebrity Cruises.

“Allowing guests to explore the new Celebrity Edge guided by holographic hosts will deliver a new level of access and showcase how augmented reality continues to move into the mainstream,” said Jason Kim, CEO of Trigger. “Taking this technology out to sea brings its own unique challenges; coupled with live action volumetric capture makes this app truly an industry first.”

The tour uses binaural audio, soundscaping and 3D augmented reality technology to give guests behind-the-scenes access to the groundbreaking new ship, with AR showcases available in more than a dozen locations around the ship.

“This is not your standard museum audio tour,” said Fain. “With the new Celebrity Edge Access Tour app, we augmented the reality of the ship with a 3D tour of the behind-the-scenes stories available right in the palm of our guests hands.”

The AR tour includes the Grand Plaza, a spectacular Italian piazza-inspired space that spans three decks; the Magic Carpet, a cantilevered, floating platform that reaches heights of 13 stories above sea level along the ships exterior; and Eden, a unique venue that blends dining, entertainment and state-of-the-art design.
