Public transport app Citymapper is launching its very own bus service in the heart of London as it seeks to revolutionise the way we use buses.

The CMX1 bus route, which has been coordinated with Transport for London, will run circular in the middle of the Big Smoke – stopping at places such as Waterloo Bridge, Blackfriars Station and the Royal Courts of Justice. The bus will begin running 9 May and 10 May as a trial.

The green, smaller-than-average, bus features a smart display, USB charging ports, real time operational control, driver management, scheduling systems, and, of course, integrate with the Citymapper app.

“We also feel buses haven’t evolved enough. They still roam around cities utilising old systems of operations and inefficient technology,” said the Citymapper team in a Medium post. “If we’re going to solve urgent problems of congestion and infrastructure, we need buses to improve, to operate smarter. In the era of smartphones, we can have responsive buses that react to real time needs.

“We’ve helped people figure out which bus to take. When it arrives. How long it takes. When to get off. Now it’s inevitable that we help make them work better. We don’t have to do it all ourselves, we’re glad to partner with others. We built an easy to use app by being users ourselves. So, we feel the best way to build software for buses is to run buses ourselves. And learn from running some public experiments.”
