US pizza restaurant chain Domino’s has teamed up with Starship Technologies, a company that develops self-driving robotic delivery vehicles, to begin using robots to deliver pizzas.
The partnership between Starship and Domino’s Pizza Enterprises, the largest franchisee of the Domino’s brand in the world, will see pizzas delivered from stores to customers within a one mile radius in selected German and Dutch cities. The project will run under Domino’s Robotic Unit (DRU), an initiative using robot and drone technologies for delivery.
“We are a global company and we are eager to progress innovative technology in all of the countries in which we operate – we are very excited to be partnering with Starship as it brings regular deliveries by robot one step closer to commercial operations,” said Don Meji, Domino’s Group CEO and managing director.
“Robotic delivery units will complement our existing delivery methods, including cars, scooters and e-bikes
“With our growth plans over the next five to 10 years, we simply won’t have enough delivery drivers if we do not look to add to our fleet through initiatives such as this.”
This latest link up adds to a growing list of partnerships for Starship. A list that includes the likes of Just Eat, Hermes Parcel Delivery and DoorDash.
