Fiat Chrysler has agreed to join the BMW, Intel, and Intel-owned Mobileye self-driving alliance – becoming the first automaker to link up with the group other than BMW.

The consortium aims to develop ‘a world leading, state-of-the-art autonomous driving platform for global deployment’. The group hopes to be able to deliver this solution, that can be used by automakers around the world, by 2021.

To help the alliance to reach its goal, Fiat Chrysler will bring engineering, and other technical resources and expertise to the table. Fiat Chrysler already has a non-exclusive arrangement with Alphabet’s Waymo self-driving unit.

“In order to advance autonomous driving technology, it is vital to form partnerships among automakers, technology providers and suppliers,” said Sergio Marchionne, FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) CEO. “Joining this cooperation will enable FCA to directly benefit from the synergies and economies of scale that are possible when companies come together with a common vision and objective.”

Earlier this year, auto parts manufacturers Continental and Delphi joined the consortium as systems integrators.

The alliance says it is still on-track to deploy 40 autonomous test vehicles on the road by the end of this year, and expects to benefit from leveraging data and learnings from Mobileye’s 100 Level 4 test vehicle fleet.
