Gaming accounts for 71 per cent of app revenues across 16 leading markets, despite only account for a 36 per cent share of downloads, according to MEF and Distimo research.
The US still contributes the largest share of total app revenues – 32 per cent – where freemium apps generate 86 per cent of revenue in the App Store and 94 per cent in Google Play. Pay-once apps like WhatsApp generate 7 per cent and 4 per cent respectively, while the remaining 7 per cent in the App Store and 2 per cent on Android are paid-for apps with further in-app purchase options.
But the research also notes that growth in markets like the US and UK is slowing. South Korea is currently experiencing the largest growth, with revenues increasing by 10 times over the last past year. This is followed by Japan and China, both seeing revenue grow by nearly four times.
Markets like Brazil, Mexico and India still have a long way to go in terms of the share of revenue, each contributing 1 per cent or less to the total market.
