Google pulls AI Olympics ad amid backlash

Google has pulled an Olympics advertisement for its Gemini AI chatbot following backlash from the public.

The ad, which featured a girl using AI to write a fan letter, titled “Dear Sydney,” showcased a girl using artificial intelligence to compose a letter to athlete Sydney McLaughlin.

In the 60-second spot, a father uses Gemini AI to help write a letter to the Team USA hurdler on behalf of his daughter.

“Gemini, help my daughter write a letter telling Sydney how inspiring she is,” the father said in the commercial, prompting Gemini.

The commercial briefly displays the AI-generated draft and concludes with a shot of the young girl running on the track, accompanied by the text overlay, “A little help from Gemini.”

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the tech giant told CNBC: While the ad tested well before airing, given the feedback, we have decided to phase the ad out of our Olympics rotation.

“We believe that AI can be a great tool for enhancing human creativity, but we can never replace it. Our goal was to create an authentic story celebrating Team USA.”
