Google is planning to update the app listings in its Play Store so that any app supported by advertising has to include it in the details with elements like age rating, publisher and whether or not it features in-app purchases.
According to Droid Life, an email has been sent to developers detailing the change, which expands on move introduced at Google I/O where any apps that were part of the Designed for Families program had to include ad-supported labels.
“By January 11, 2016, you must sign in to the Play Developer Console and declare whether your app contain ads (such as ads delivered through third party ad networks, display ads, native ads, and/or banner ads),” said the email. “After this date, the ads declaration will be required to make any updates to your apps.”
“While developers are responsible for accurately declaring ad presence in their apps, Google may verify this at any time and display the Ads label if appropriate. If you feel your app has been incorrectly flagged for containing ads, please contact our policy support team.”
Whether the introduction of such labels will affect downloads for ad-supported apps, or simply lead to a new era of transparency in app development and advertising will have to be seen, but adding the labeling to family friendly apps does not seem to have impacted their popularity or level of engagement.
