Hilton Turns Loyalty App into Digital Room Key

Hilton mobile room keyHilton Hotels has introduced mobile room key functionality to its Hilton HHonors app.

Called Digital Key, the function enables visitors to bypass the check-in desk – at least, in countries where the law allows it – and unlock the door of their room, and any other areas of the hotel that require a key, using their smartphone.

The functionality will only be available to members of the HHonors loyalty scheme, at least initially. To encourage uptake, Hilton is offering 2,500 HHonors points to anyone who uses the Digital Key.

By early 2016, Hilton says 250 of its US hotels will support the functionality.

“Through our app, were giving HHonors members the ability to better control and personalize their stay with us,” said Calpin. “Imagine if an HHonors member is arriving at our hotel after a long trip or running late to a meeting – Digital Key can provide our frequent guests the added benefit of going straight to their room without stopping at the front desk.”

The functionality builds on the introduction of digital check-in and room selection last July, which Hilton says has been used 5m times.
