Google could be planning to introduce a ‘Play Pass’ subscription service for Android apps and games on the Google Play Store, according to a report on 9to5Google.
The report references a report on the XDS developer website which includes decompiled code that references a ‘PlayPass Subscription’. Additionally, the report mentions a Google Opinion Rewards survey which includes the following question:
“Imagine your app store has a subscription that offers hundreds of dollars worth of paid apps and games for a monthly fee. How well does “Pass” describe this service?” The question is followed by a series of multiple choice answers, ranging from ‘Not at all’ to ‘Very well’.
The likelihood is that with a Play Pass subscription, Play Store users would be able to access multiple apps and games on payment of a recurring monthly or annual fee. But with so many games operating on a freemium basis, monetised through in-app ads or purchases, it’s not clear which apps or games would be included in any such service.
