Local Multiplayer Coming to Android Games

google play gamesGoogle has unveiled an update to its games infrastructure that will enable “ambient, real-time” games with more than one user, allowing users to challenge other nearby Android owners to multiplayer games.

The feature relies upon the game using Googles in-house multiplayer back-end rather than one built by developers, which may limit its adoption rate slightly, but the prospect of being able to interact with local users may attract many game developers to the new functionality.

The update manages network connections to create and maintain a real-time multiplayer room that enables communication between multiple players in the same game session and lets players send data directly to one another. Developers can include a user interface to invite players to join a room, look for random players for auto-matching, or use a combination of both.
