Lufthansa has topped the eDigital Research benchmark of travel apps for the second time running, although hotels continue to dominate the top 10.
Features like online check-in, mobile boarding and repeat customer logins have boosted airline brands, but online sites continue to outperform their mobile counterparts.
Second was Hotels.com, which came top overall among hotel apps and for the customer journey on its desktop website. It was rated highly for features including integrating GPS with search and displaying images alongside search results to inform purchase decisions.
Third overall was booking.com, fourth was easyJet and fifth was Premier Inn. The Kayak app won the best online travel category.
Lufthansa was top in four of five key areas, including look and feel, range, quality of features and overall experience. easyJet was ahead in ease of navigation.
Compared to other eDigital research sectors, travel performs well compared to eHomeServices, but worse than mCommerce and retail apps.
The report said: “Top performing apps such as Lufthansa and Hotels.com are successfully delivering key services provided by their conventional web counterparts. These include access to reviews and quality images as well as the ability to search, amend and book with clear pricing displayed throughout.”
