Nintendo is shutting down Miitomo, its debut smartphone app, just over two years after launching the social networking app.

The app, which launched in March 2016, will be shut down on 9 May 2018 – with the sales of Miitomo coins having already ceased. Nintendo will, however, offer daily login bonuses of coins and game tickets, so users can continue using the app’s features right up until the end.

Upon closure of the app, users will no longer be able to see answers to questions or messages in the app, as well as no longer being able to use items obtained in the app. Users will be able to transfer their Mii – the name of the Nintendo’s user avatars – characters to their Nintendo accounts, however no other information will be carried over. Sidekick Mii characters will be deleted, but can be saved as a QR code and transferred to Mii Maker, and Miifotos will no longer be viewable anywhere unless saved to a smart device.

Miitomo enjoyed a positive start to life. In its first month, it had passed 10m users – with 300m conversations held, and 20m Mifotos shared on social media. The initial success of the app tailed off significantly, however, and that has led to Nintendo’s decision.
