Qualcomm wants to see the death of iPhones in China, as Apple battle rages on

QualcommQualcomm is hoping to get a ban on all iPhones in China in the latest phase of its bitter legal battle with Apple over alleged unpaid royalties.

The lawsuits filed by the San Diego-based chipmaker, in the Beijing intellectual property court, seek to end the sale and manufacture of iPhones in the world’s largest smartphone market on the grounds of patent infringement and seeking injunctive relief, as first reported by Bloomberg.

The suits are said to be based on three non-standard essential patents covering power management and Apple’s Force Touch technology. Though, Apple is confident that Qualcomm doesn’t have a standing in the case.

“In our many years of ongoing negotiations with Qualcomm, these patents have never been discussed,” said an Apple spokesman. “Like their other courtroom manoeuvres, we believe this latest legal effort will fail.”

Apple’s legal fight with Qualcomm started at the beginning of the year when the tech giant accused the chipmaker of charging royalties “for technologies they have nothing to do with” and, as a result, began the process of suing for the company for around $1bn. This was followed up with Apple deciding to put a stop to its payments to Qualcomm until the legal battle has end.

The following month, Qualcomm took the battle a step further by turning its attention to Apple’s four iPhone and iPad manufacturers. This development saw the chipmaker file a suit in California against Foxconn, Pegatron, Wistron, and Compal for license breaches in refusing to pay Qualcomm for the use of its technologies. The four Taiwanese companies would then follow-up with a counterclaim accusing Qualcomm of violating US antitrust laws.

Last week, Qualcomm was find NT$23.4bn (£581m) by Taiwan’s Fair Trade Commission for violation of the country’s competition law with some of its business practices. The chipmaker is appealing the decision.
