The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance is reportedly lining up a partnership with Alphabet’s self-driving car unit, Waymo, which may pave the way for the development of self-driving taxis between the group.

The companies are in the final phase of talks, according to Nikkei Asian Review, and part of the discussion is focused on the possibility of developing autonomous taxis using Nissan vehicles alongside a system that handles bookings and payments.

Waymo has previously penned similar deals with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Jaguar Land Rover, but a deal with the Alliance would represent its biggest so far due to the sheer volume of vehicles Nissan, Renault, and Mitsubishi sell between them. In 2018, the trio achieved combined global sales of 10.8m vehicles.

At the backend of last year, Waymo launched a commercial self-driving service named ‘Waymo One’. The service was initially opened to the hundreds of people that are part of the company’s Early Rider Program. It has not yet provided a timeline on a wider rollout of the service.
