RIM Offers Free SDK Licence and BlackBerry PlayBooks

RIM and Marmalade, makers of a cross-platform SDK, have announced a special offer to encourage app development ahead of the launch of Blackberry 10. Those who register with the scheme will initially receive a Marmalade SDK licence for the BlackBerry platform, as well as a BlackBerry PlayBook tablet.

Once the app is published, developers can unlock Marmalades full cross-platform capabilities for free by upgrading to its Indie Licence. The Marmalade SDK offers the option to develop native apps with C/C++ or create HTML5 apps.

The drive is designed to attract content to the BlackBerry 10 platform, while making it easy for developers to manage their content across multiple operating systems. It is expected to deliver thousands of new apps before BB10 launches, a date that has already been delayed from March this year.

Harvey Elliott, MD and COO of Marmalade, said: “We are thrilled to help developers discover the power and agility of the BlackBerry 10 platform. We passionately believe that more platforms mean more possibilities, and this fantastic offer really makes that a reality for all indie developers. Develop a brilliant app for BlackBerry and then target other platforms later on.”
