Samsung will launch mobile web payments for all Android smartphones, not just Samsung devices, in its home country during the first quarter of 2017, it has revealed.
Samsung Pay Mini, as the service will be called, will enable Android devices to be used to make online payments in South Korea, after downloading a dedicated app, and will work very much the same as Android Pay.
The service will compliment Samsung’s existing offline payments platform, Samsung Pay, which enables users to make offline purchases through a supported Samsung smartphone or smartwatch. However, Samsung Pay will remain exclusive to the company’s Galaxy phones.
For the time being, the South Korean multinational conglomerate has no plans to roll out Samsung Pay Mini anywhere but in its home nation. It is likely, however, that the payment solution will eventually end up in various locations around the globe.
The announcement of the mobile web payments comes a week after Samsung announced its biggest profit leap in three years, yet still managed to fall behind Apple in the global smartphone market – where it suffered due to its flaming Galaxy Note 7s.
