scandit_web.jpgScandit, a barcode scanning platform for mobile, has raised $7.5m (£6.2m) in a Series A funding round with Atomico, a London-based venture capital firm setup by Skype co-founder Niklas Zennström.

The investment is aimed at enabling Scandit to further develop its software-based, hardware data capture platform and cloud services. The company says it also has plans to expand internationally, with the opening of sales offices across the US and Europe.

Samuel Mueller, Scandit CEO and co-founder, said: “Atomico is the perfect partner for us. They share our belief that the right product, backed by a team of innovative, dedicated people can change an entire industry. That includes an industry where a handful of incumbents hold three-quarters of the market share.”

Scandit, founded in 2009 in Zurich, delivers mobile solutions for smartphones, tablets and wearables. Its barcode scanner SDK enables businesses to integrate Scandit technology into their apps – giving workers and consumers the ability to scan barcodes from within the apps.

“What Samuel and his team have achieved is testament to a winning combination of an exceptional product and team,” said Teddie Wardi, partner at Atomico. “They are exactly the kind of founders we look for, who have built a company that, through disruptive technology, is ready to expand and become a global category leader. We’re excited to partner with Samuel and the team as they develop their stronghold.”
