Starling Bank set to open second UK office, creating 150 jobs

Starling BankUK mobile-only challenger bank Starling Bank has plans to open up a new office in the UK this year and add around 150 more staff to its ranks, according to the company’s founder and chief executive.

Starling’s second office is being lined up in Southampton. Here, it intends to recruit up to 50 software engineers and 100 customer service team members, CEO Anne Boden told TechCrunch.

Starling has 460,000 personal current accounts and 30,000 business accounts signed up to its service, as of last month. Those figures were released alongside the news that it had raised £75m in a Series C funding round to help accelerate the company’s global expansion, starting with Europe, and for investment in more financial products.

Shortly after that, Starling picked £100m in grants from the Capability and Innovation Fund, which was setup by the Royal Bank of Scotland – as part of conditions tied to its £45bn government bailout – to help smaller banks build out their offerings and create more options for businesses. With the help of these grants, Boden said the company would hire around 400 employees in the UK.
