Car maker Toyota is to allow Android Auto devices to connect directly to its cars, after announcing compatibility with Apple Inc.’s CarPlay in January, Business Insider reports, citing as its source: “a person familiar with the matter”. If true, the decision will end many years’ resistance to the Google in-car infotainment software, due to safety and security concerns.
Previously both Android Auto and Car Play could only connect with Toyota vehicles using SmartDeviceLink, a telematics system developed by Ford that controls how Android Auto and CarPlay look on the dash and limits their access to car data.
A Toyota spokesperson refused to confirm that the decision had been taken, but told Business Insider that the company acknowledges demand for Android Auto and that direct connection is something the company is considering.
