Verizon has reportedly been the latest US carrier to call off its plans to sell smartphones from Chinese phone maker Huawei following pressure from the US government, according to Bloomberg.

The decision comes after AT&T chose not to go through with its own planned deal with Huawei earlier this month. Both mobile network carriers decided to wave off their deals after the US Senate and House intelligence committees highlighted security concerns about allowing Chinese companies into the US telecoms industry.

The US’s fears over China’s spying has recently led to the consideration of nationalising the building of a 5G network, although this has been called out by many people on both sides of the political spectrum. Nonetheless, the reluctance of the US government and US carriers to give a Chinese phone maker access to the US could actually slow down the introduction of 5G – with Huawei being one of the most likely candidates to offer a 5G-capable phone sooner rather than later.

Despite not having a US carrier by its side, Huawei will still be able to sell its flagship Mate 10 Pro in the US through channels like Amazon, though most US consumers choose to buy their handsets from carriers.
