Voxer Adds End-to-end Encryption Through Private Chats

VoxerVoxer Private Chats has become the latest messaging platform to introduce end-to-end encryption for its users on both iOS and Android.

‘Private Chats’ prevents anybody, even the ‘walkie talkie’ messenger, from listening, reading or seeing users’ messages other than the person(s) sending and receiving the messages. Though Voxer claims all messages on its platform are secure.

In a blog post, Voxer says: “Encryption is one of the most important issues today with increasing cases of digital information being improperly accessed or stolen. This technology is one of the most effective ways to achieve data security from hackers and cybercriminals, and reaffirm our digital civil liberties against mass surveillance.”

The app uses the Signal protocol, used by messaging platforms such as WhatsApp, to ensure data is not decrypted until it ‘safely reaches its destination’.

Unlike other messaging services, the ‘Private Chat’ feature is activated on a per-chat basis – rather than applying end-to-end encryption to all conversations. In addition, logging out of a Voxer account will erase all of the content in a private chat.
