Twitter Retires API v1

Twitter has retired API v1, effectively killing off its TweetDeck iOS and Android apps, as it transitions fully to API v1.1.

The change has been coming for a while. Twitter announced it would be discontinuing API v1 and TweetDeck in March, and has been performing periodic blackout tests on the API ever since. These tests, according to Twitter, found that the “vast majority” of apps have already made the jump to v1.1.

It might seem a little strange, then, that this doesnt apply to the Twitter-owned app, which it bought for a rumoured $40m (£26m) just two years ago.

The official line is that shuttering the apps gives Twitter more bandwidth to focus on how its services are used – as mobile users increasingly use the main Twitter app, while TweetDecks power users are mostly web-based. Personally though, as a dedicated user of the Android app, thats not much consolation.
