Amazon is set introduce its grab-and-go supermarket in the UK

Amazon GoAmazon is preparing to bring its cashierless grocery store to the UK after trademarking several potential slogans with the Intellectual Property Office (IPO).

The trademarks, which were first reported by Bloomberg, were published on 19 May and include ‘No Queue. No Checkout. (No, Seriously.)’, ‘No Lines. No Checkout. (No, Seriously.)’, ‘Every Queue is a Defect’, and ‘Every Line is a Defect’.

The move to trademark the slogans is a sign of Amazon’s intent to become a major player in the supermarket industry. Setting up shop in the UK will put it in competition with the likes of Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Asda – which all already face huge competition from discount chains like Aldi and Lidl.

The Seattle-based company opened its first Amazon Go store in beta to its employees back in December 2016. The store uses sensors to detect what items shoppers have picked up, and automatically bill their Amazon accounts once they leave the store.

However, the eCommerce giant ran into several initial problems with the store. These issues included the technology being unable to track more than 20 people at once, it being unable to track people unless they moved very slowly, and it having difficulty tracking items moved from their original spots.

Despite this, Amazon now seems to be confident in the technology and is ready to make a serious push at establishing itself as a supermarket player.
