On Friday, Apple will begin taking pre-orders for its latest smartphone, the iPhone X, before its official release the following Friday (3 November). The iPhone X will feature AI heavily through the introduction of the phone’s A11 Bionic chip – and we can expect to see the use of the technology play a central role in more Apple smartphones in the future.
The iPhone X uses AI technology delivers face recognition through the phone’s Face ID, which can be used to unlock the device, enable Apple Pay, gain access to secure apps, and more. Furthermore, the technology is implemented in the phone’s Animojis, which animate emojis using people’s facial expressions. And, of course, there’s Siri.
“We think that the frameworks that we’ve got, the ‘neural engines’ we’ve put in the phone, in the Watch… We do view that as a huge piece of the future, we believe these frameworks will allow developers to create apps that will do more and more in this space, so we think the phone is a major platform,” said Apple COO Jeff Williams, speaking Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s 30th anniversary celebration, as reported by Reuters.
“I think we’re at an inflection point, with on-device computing, coupled with the potential of AI, to really change the world.”
Despite Apple’s focus on the integration of AI in their phones, Williams added that this wouldn’t just be limited to mobile devices and would play a part in Apple’s other products also.
