Apples iOS 11 has killed off nearly 200,000 old iPhone apps

iOS 11 iPhone iPadThe arrival of iOS 11 has spelled the end for a whole host of older apps, as Apple has decided to remove support for 32-bit apps from the latest version of its operating system.

It is believed that around 180,000 apps will no longer function as a result of the iOS 11 rollout, or eight per cent of all iPhone apps, according to Sensor Tower. It has long been predicted that Apple would eventually stop supporting the apps on iPhones and iPads, and that time has finally come to coincide with the arrivals of the iPhone 8 and iPhone X.

The change was initially rumoured when Apple introduced a 64-bit processor with the iPhone 5S in 2013, and made it clear to developers that they may want to update their apps.

For the most part, a large number of the apps would’ve remained untouched by developers for two or more years, so would only provide issues for those that still use the apps rather than those who made them. And, anyway, Apple won’t be hit too heavily by the loss of the apps – they only amount to less than one per cent of Apple’s quarterly App Store revenue.
