FCC launches new Mobile Speed Test app

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has unveiled a new Mobile Speed Test app, designed to help users easily challenge provider-reported mobile coverage data.

The new app will replace the original FCC Speed Test app, which allows consumers to test their mobile and in-home broadband performance.

Now, the new app includes features to ensure accurate provider-reported mobile coverage data.

These features include “Repeated Test” for hands-free testing, an in-app map showing test locations and the ability to review speed test results on the National Broadband Map.

FCC Chairwoman, Jessica Rosenworcel, said: “In today’s digital world, a fast and reliable internet connection is essential for everything from education to healthcare to work and staying connected with family and friends.

“Consumers deserve to know where they have mobile coverage and at what speeds and the FCC wants to include their experiences in our effort to create a more precise map of available coverage.

She continued: “Our new app makes it easier to share real-world experience with connectivity, empowering consumers and making it possible for up-to-date and crowdsourced information to inform our mapping.”

The new app provides users with free, open, and transparent information about their mobile network performance and is part of the FCC’s Broadband Data Collection program, which aims to gather comprehensive and accurate data on broadband coverage and quality across the United States, the company added.
