Microsofts digital assistant Cortana has begun a public beta of its Android version, enabling US users to access the much-lauded program outside of Windows for the first time.
The public beta is one of the first steps in opening up the digital assistant to other ecosystems, including a planned expansion to iPhones. It is part of Microsofts efforts to reach mobile users beyond the Windows Phone, and to link together desktop computers running Windows 10 with users mobile devices.
Once finished versions of Cortana for Android and iOS are complete, they will act as a bridge between any Windows 10 devices and the smartphone, enabling instant backup of any photos taken or documents edited, as well as allowing owners to stream music from their desktop device to their phone for free.
In addition to creating a link with desktop computers, the Android version of Cortana has most of the abilities of its Windows cousin, including voice recognition, searching the web, setting reminders and tracking important information like flight details or meetings.
The beta version for Android does lack some functionality however, such as the ability to launch apps and toggle settings, as well as hands-free activation. However, these features are planned to be added over time, as the beta receives feedback.
