Reddit adds location tagging, powered by Foursquare

Reddit location tagsReddit has joined the likes of fellow social platforms, such as Facebook, Snapchat and Twitter, in adding support for geotagging posts made via mobile.

Location tagging, which has been made in partnership with local search-and-discovery service Foursquare, is an opt-in feature. Reddit users will never be required to tag their location when posting to the site, enabling them to remain completely anonymous.

“Reddit users can geotag their posts with a specific venue or location, adding context and interest,” said Mike Harkey, VP of business development at Foursquare, in a Medium post. “Just as Snapchatters love geo-filters and Pinterest users go wild for photo maps, now the Reddit community can quickly note where their story takes place.”

The move from Reddit, known as ‘the front page of the internet’, can be seen as a slightly strange one. Though location tags are completely optional, they still begin to remove the anonymous aspect of Reddit that it is so famous for. As a result, it will be interesting to see how many of its users actually decide to use the tags and give others a slight insight into their lives.

Nonetheless, the location tagging feature is available through the official Reddit app on both Android and iOS.
