Sony surpasses 1m PlayStation VR headsets sold

PlayStation VRWith the Electronic Entertainment Expo (commonly known as E3) just a week away, Sony has announced that it has sold more than 1m PlayStation VR headsets since its launch in October last year.

Those figures place Sony’s headset ahead of the likes of HTC Vive and Oculus Rift but still a long way behind Samsung’s Gear VR.

Shawn Layden, president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment America, told The Verge that “it’s just a million units” – taking into account that the number of PS4 owners is approaching 60m.

“We’ll have freer supply in the marketplace [in 2017],” Layden continued. “We got to a point around Christmas where you would be hard-pressed to find VR anywhere. So, we dialled back some of our promotional activity at that time because we didn’t want to be promoting a platform for people to find out they couldn’t get it. I didn’t want to create more unhappy customers.”
