Apple has revealed a new update for its iTunes U software, introducing new tools for educators and students to use to build and experience educational content on the iPad.

The update, which will be released on 8 July, enables teachers to use the free iTunes app to create, edit and manage whole courses directly from the iPad for the first time, and gives students new ways to collaborate including starting class discussions and asking questions direct from their iPads.

“Education is at the core of Apples DNA and iTunes U is an incredibly valuable resource for teachers and students,” said Eddy Cue, Apples senior vice president of internet software and services. “iTunes U features an amazing selection of academic materials for everyone around the world. Now, with the ability to better manage and discuss education content, learning becomes even more personalised on iPad.”

Teachers will be able to add rich content and learning materials from iWork, iBooks Author or any of the over 75,000 educational apps currently available for the iPad. They will also be able to capture photos and videos to incorporate into courses. The new discussions feature for students enables them to create and follow classroom discussions, and receive notifications about new topics or replies, while teachers will have the ability to participate and moderate in the discussions too.
