YouTube Hopes To Expand Red Service with TV Shows and Movies

Star Wars iPhoneYouTube executives have reportedly met with Hollywood studios and other production companies in the past few months to discuss licensing new content for its subscription-based YouTube Red service, according to the Wall Street Journal.

YouTube is apparently seeking films and programs that will be accessible only to users who pay the $10 (£6.70) a month YouTube Red fee, which also gives them access to Google Play Music and the ability to download videos for offline viewing.

Its not yet clear if a deal has been reached with any production companies, or if YouTube is seeking to license existing properties or create its own. Streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu have all had varying levels of success in developing their own original content.

YouTube executives have previously said they plan to focus on talent that has risen to prominence on their own site, taking advantage of the wealth of video bloggers and film makers who make use of the platform.

Red subscription fees recently caused YouTube to make an appearance on the iOS App Stores chart for Top Grossing apps after the initial free trial period ended for the earliest subscribers. Whether it continues to earn YouTube such high revenues will remain to be seen, but its clearly a positive sign that people are willing to pay for an ad-free YouTube.
