The Walt Disney Company was reportedly in talks to acquire social news site BuzzFeed earlier this year, according to Fortune. BuzzFeed, its claimed, was looking for a price of more than $1bn (£0.6bn) which led to talks breaking down.
At its latest round of venture capital funding in January 2013, BuzzFeed was valued at around $200m. The company is expecting to double its revenues in 2014, to $120m, according to Bloomberg.
The timing of these talks seems to line up with Disneys acquisition of video production firm Maker Studios, announced last month. Its hardly a like-for-like replacement for Buzzfeed, but its possible that this deal was a factor in Disneys decision.
