EU investigation into Google AdSense nearing conclusion

Google tabletThe EU are nearing the close of their third investigation into Google – and it could be set to be hit with another hefty fine – as suggested by the European Competition Commissioner.

Comments from Europe’s antitrust chief, Margrethe Vestager, regarding the investigation came at the Web Summit in Lisbon, Reuters reports.

“We are approaching the end of that investigation,” she told reporters at the summit when asked for an update on the investigation.

This third case was opened up against the Alphabet-owned tech giant by the European Commission. In this instance, Google is accused of preventing third parties using its AdSense product from displaying search ads from Google competitors.

Vestager’s comments on the investigation come months after she levelled Google with a record €4.34bn fine for forcing the makers of Android smartphones and other devices to use its search and web-browsing tools. That fine came a year after she hit Google with a €2.42bn fine for promoting its own shopping comparison service at the top of search results ahead of rivals.
