Facebook Adds Email Sign-up Option to Instant Articles

Facebook has introduced an email sign-up message to its Instant Articles news offering, with The New York Times and Washington Post among the first to trial the new option.

The sign-up messages are initially being shown to a limited number of readers, Digiday reports, and early results havent yet been shared – and may never see the light of day.

Its part of an ongoing effort by Facebook to make the product more appealing to publishers, some of whom have previously expressed reservations about the lack of user data – and in some cases ad revenue – they receive through the likes of Instant Articles and Apple News. E-mail, meanwhile, offers publishers a way to reach readers directly and drive them to their own sites without having to go via a platform like Facebook, so this new feature seems like a peace offering on Facebooks part.
