Ford and Amazon have teamed to bring Alexa to Ford vehicles – allowing drivers the chance to control their car from the comfort of their home, if they own devices such as an Echo or Echo Dot.

Ford says the integration will enable Ford car owners to ‘play and resume audiobooks, order items on Amazon, search for and transfer local destinations to the in-car navigation system, and more’. From the owner’s home, they will be able to remote start, lock or unlock car doors, and get vehicle information using their voice.

“Ford and Amazon are aligned around a vision that your voice should be the primary way to interface with your favourite devices and services,” said Don Butler, executive director at Ford connected vehicle and services. “Customers will be able to start their vehicles from home, and manage smart home features while on the road – making life easier.”

The US multinational automaker says the integration will be rolled out in two phases. The first is set to roll out later this month – connecting the owners of Ford Focus Electric, Fusion Energi and C-Max Energi to their cars from the comfort of their homes. The second phase, expected in the summer, will enable Ford drivers with the Sync 3 system to communicate with Alexa while driving.
