Ikea adds Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple HomeKit support to smart lighting

Ikea Tradfai smart lightingSwedish multinational furniture store Ikea is adding voice functionality to its smart lighting range, enabling people to control their lighting via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, as well as being able to adjust lighting through Apple’s Home app and Siri voice commands.

Beginning this summer through to early autumn, Ikea’s Trådfri smart lighting will be able to work with the virtual AI assistants as the furniture giant looks to cement itself as one of the centre points of people’s connected homes.

“With IKEA Home Smart we challenge everything that is complicated and expensive with the connected home,” said Björn Block, business leader for Ikea Home Smart. “Making our products work with others on the market takes us one step closer to meet people’s needs, making it easier to interact with your smart home products.”

Ikea made its smart lighting range available to all markets in Europe and North America last month. Through use of a remote control or through the Trådfri app, people can dim lighting, switch between warm and cold light and set lighting for different moods. With the introduction of virtual AI assistants, all this can be done with the power of voice.

Ikea says it sees great potential in the smart home business and will continue to work with others on the market to the most out its connected products.

“We think that smart home technology should be accessible for everybody. That is why we will continue to make our products work with others on the market,” said Jeanette Skjelmose, business area manager for lighting and Ikea Home Smart.
