Netflix launches AR hologram tool for George Clooneys The Midnight Sky

Ahead of the premiere of George Clooney movie The Midnight Sky on Netflix, the streaming service has launched an augmented reality (AR) hologram tool for sending video messages to friends and family over the holidays.

The tool, built by production studio Unit9 using webAR platform 8th Wall, enables users to record and upload short video messages and have them transformed into AR holograms. The recorded messages have a filter applied to them to make them into 3-D, curved holograms that can be played on any flat surface, similar to the ones featured in the film.

The microsite also features a welcome message from Clooney himself, giving users the opportunity to place his hologram into their own environments and hear him encouraging them to make use of the tool.

The Midnight Sky, which premieres on Netflix on 23 December, is a post-apocalyptic story which follows a lonely scientist (Clooney) isolated in the Artic Circle as he races to alert a crew of astronauts about what has happened back on earth. In the movie – which also stars Felicity Jones, David Oyelowo, Tiffany Boone, Demián Bichir, and Kyle Chandler – the astronauts are able to view holographic memories of their friends and families to help cope with being alone in space.
