Surge and T.I.-backed Moolah are bringing free wireless services to low-income families

Moolah Mobile, an app that turns Androids into native ad platforms and boasts rapper T.I. as an investor, has partnered with SurgePhone Wireless to bring free mobile phone services to low-income communities. An estimated 1m people will gain access to free talk, text and data services by generating income via the Moolah platform, which will cover their wireless bills.

“Moolah Mobile’s goal is to use emerging tech to give more economic opportunities and resources to those who need them most,” said Vernell Woods, CEO of Moolah Mobile. “We’re very excited to partner with Surge in creating the first free wireless service for underserved communities.”

To kick-off the free wireless services, Surge will be giving out its Google-Certified Surge Volt Android phones, accompanied by Moolah install kits. For users who want to keep their own Android devices, Surge will provide SIM Starter Kits.

The service is available today in select US locations, including Florida, Georgia, Virginia, and Texas. Surge and Moolah’s goal is to hit 40,000 locations by the end of 2019, expanding services to between 3,000 and 5,000 locations per month.

“I decided to become an investor in Moolah Mobile because its one of the few tech companies Ive seen who truly want to help everyday people have access to technology,” said Tip T.I. Harris, a strategic investor in Moolah Mobile.

After users install the Moolah app on their devices, they can access native ads on their home screens and complete surveys, which will generate revenue that can be used towards phone and utility bills, Amazon purchases and gift cards. The app also includes resources for wealth management, education, and career assistance.

“Partnering with Moolah Mobile lets us use emerging technology to improve the quality of life for the unbanked, under-banked, and overlooked,” said Brian Cox, the CEO of Surge. “It’s exciting working with a company that shares our vision and has the intensity and hustle necessary to execute it. They’re an ideal partner in providing top quality, value, and service in their telecom and FinTech products but also new technology that improves communication for our retail members and new products. I look forward to a sustained partnership with Moolah Mobile as we continue to provide technology and digital services to the disadvantaged.”
