YouTube Launches Music App

YouTube Music appGoogle has launched YouTube Music, a standalone app focused on music discovery.

The app narrows down YouTubes vast selection of videos to just the music content, including tracks and entire albums as well as covers and concert footage, with users able to choose between watching the full video or just the audio. The app will also automatically recommend tracks and create personalised stations of videos based on the users listening habits

An ad-free version of the app is offered as part of the YouTube Red subscription service.

“Today, any artist can upload a video to YouTube and get discovered by over 1bn people around the globe. That global exposure has allowed YouTube and Google to pay out over $3bn to the record industry to date,” said T. Jay Fowler, director of product management at YouTube. “But it’s also provided an incredible source of promotion for artists, helping fuel ticket sales, move merchandise, and boost album and song downloads. Just this month, Adele’s Hello became the fastest rising video of the year on YouTube, while also breaking the record for first week download sales.

“But we want to do even more to support artists and all the fans who turn to YouTube to discover music, so we’re making the experience even better with a brand new YouTube Music app.”
