Snapchat launches map feature on the back of $250m+ acquisition of social map app Zenly

Snap MapSnapchat has introduced a feature that enables users to see where their friends are and what they’re doing all over the world, and it’s all based on its latest acquisition.

Snap Map lets users share their location with friends, or choose to remain in ‘Ghost Mode’. Friends that choose to share their locations appear on the world map in the form of their Actionmoji.

This feature all came about as a result of Snap’s recent quiet acquisition of social mapping startup Zenly, according to TechCrunch. The deal closed in late May and cost Snapchat between $250m and $350m in mostly cash and some stock. Zenly will continue to operate somewhat independently.

The Zenly app enables users to see where their friends are on a map – much like the Snap Map feature – however, it requires the constant use of GPS in the background. Snapchat will only pull users locations when the app is open.

The acquisition is clear sign of intent from Snap to expand the social aspects it offers in order to fend of the Facebooks of this world. Leaving Zenly to operate independently could also open up a wealth of opportunities due to Snap’s ownership of two social content apps.
