YouTube Music and Premium debut in India

YouTube MusicYouTube Music has finally launched in India with both a free, ad-supported option and a premium offering, just two weeks after Spotify debuted in the South Asian country.

The Google-owned business enters a highly competitive music streaming market in India, which is made of international behemoths including Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Prime Music, as well as local popular players in the shape of JioSaavn, Gaana, Airtel Wynk, and Hungama.

YouTube Music Premium is priced at 99 rupees (£1.08/$1.42) a month for an ad free experience which enables the subscriber to play YouTube music videos in the background while toggling between apps or even when the phone is locked. Google Play Music subscribers get YouTube Music Premium as part of their membership, and everything on Google Play Music will remain the same.

In addition to YouTube Music, YouTube Premium has been introduced to combine both YouTube’s music offering with access to YouTube’s original shows, such as Cobra Kai and BTS: Burn The Stage. This offering, which costs 129 rupees, also removes ads and enables background and offline play across the entirety of YouTube. New Indian customers who own Samsung Galaxy S10 devices get four months of free access to YouTube Premium.

In Spotify’s first week in India, it amassed more than 1m unique users across both its free and premium tiers. The world’s biggest music streaming service charges 119 rupees a month for its premium offering, but also offers other billing plans including single-day, as well as three-month, six-month, and yearly prepaid plans. Meanwhile, students receive a 50 per cent discount.
