Home automation appliance producer Nest, which has been operating as a subsidiary of Alphabet since 2015, is going to become part of Google once again as part of the tech giant’s hardware team.

Google acquired Nest back in January 2014 for $3.2bn. Although Nest has operated independently of Google since this acquisition, it did not become its own standalone entity until Alphabet was formed in August 2015.

In bringing the two companies’ hardware team back together, Google intends to put its Assistant and its Home device at the heart of Nest products around the home.

“The goal is to supercharge Nest’s mission: to create a more thoughtful home, one that takes care of the people inside it and the world around it,” said a blog post from Rick Osterloh, SVP of hardware at Google, and Marwan Fawaz, Nest CEO. “By working together, we’ll continue to combine hardware, software and services to create a home that’s safer, friendlier to the environment, smarter and even helps you save money—built with Google’s artificial intelligence and the Assistant at the core.”
