Amazon is accounting for 63 per cent of the US smart speaker market

Amazon EchoAmazon’s total domination of the smart speaker market continues to roll on with its Echo family of devices now accounting for 63 per cent of the smart speakers in use in the US.

According to a Strategy Analytics survey of 1,011 smart speaker users in the US, together the Amazon Echo and Amazon Echo Dot account for 44 per cent of all smart speakers owned – 23 per cent for Amazon Echo and 21 per cent for Amazon Echo Dot.

Amazon’s closest competitor is Google, but the tech giant’s Home devices only make up 17 per cent of the market, followed by four per cent for Apple.

When asked to name one brand they would use for their next smart speaker, 54 per cent of respondents chose either Amazon, Google, or Apple – leaving almost half the market open to other outside of the ‘big three’.

“Amazon and Google may dominate today’s market, but this will not always be the case,” said David Watkins, director for smart speakers at Strategy Analytics. “Many consumers are ready to consider alternative brands, assuming they meet the high expectations identified in this study, including high quality audio, superior design and device compatibility.”

In addition, multiple ownership of smart speakers is already commonplace. 58 per cent of users have two or more smart speakers at home. 62 per cent use a smart speaker in the family room, 41 per cent in a bedroom, 39 per cent in the kitchen, and 12 per cent in the bathroom.
