Apple Unveils Watch Series 2 and Nike+, iPhone 7, 7 Plus and More

iPhone 7

Apple has unveiled the next generation of iPhone and Apple Watch devices at an event in San Francisco.

iPhone
The 4.7″ iPhone 7 and 5.5″ iPhone 7 Plus will be available 16 September, with the price starting at $649.

The 7 is the first water- and dust-resistant iPhone, and the handsets promise the best battery life ever in an iPhone and improved performance with the A10 Fusion processor, but the main selling point of the 7 is its camera – or, in the case of the Plus, cameras.

On both devices, there is a 12-megapixel camera, offering optical image stabilisation, a larger aperture and a wider colour capture. The 7 Plus adds a 12-megapixel telephoto camera with a 2x optical zoom. The most interesting benefit of the two-camera system, though, is the forthcoming feature for creating depth-of-field effects, separating out the foreground and background using machine learning technology in order to create sharper more local focus.

A potentially less welcome change is the removal of the iPhones headphone jack. Apples EarPod and AirPod headphones will instead connect via the Lightning connector. Pre-existing headphones will require a 3.5mm jack adaptor.

The iOS 10 update will roll out ahead of the launch on 13 September, with updates to Messages, Siri and 3D Touch.

Apple Watches in water

Apple Watch
The event also introduced Apple Watch Series 2, the next generation of the companys smartwatch.

The Series 2 comes with built-in GPS, supporting activity tracking without requiring a paired iPhone to be constantly nearby. The Watch is water-resistant up to 50 meters, and comes with new workout features specifically for swimmers, which enable it to track laps, average pace and even stroke type.

It also features a S2 dual-core processor, and though the watchs display is the same resolution it promises to be twice as bright as its predecessor at 1,000 nits – the single brightest display ever on an Apple device.

The Watch will be available in four different models: the standard version; the Edition, which features a ceramic casing; and tie-ups with two fashion brands, Nike and Hermès.

The Apple Watch Nike+ is being pitched as the ultimate tool for anyone who runs. It has the same aluminium case as the basic version – with the Nike logo etched into its back, naturally – plus a branded strap and integration with the Nike+ Run Club social app and some exclusive commands for Siri.

“We know runners – and we know many are looking for a device that gives them an easy, fun way to start running,” said Nike president Trevor Edwards. “The market is full of complex, hard-to-read devices that focus on your data. This focuses on your life. It’s a powerful device with a simple solution – your perfect running partner.”

The basic Series 2 model launches 16 September, with the Edition and Hermès following a week later, and the Nike+ in late October.

Once again, the devices will be supported with the rollout of new software: WatchOS 3, coming on 13 September.
