Google Developing Standalone VR Headset

Google is reportedly set to unveil a new VR headset at its IO event next week.

The headset will be named Android VR, according to tech entrepreneur Peter Rojas, who tweeted that the device willbe less powerful than the HTC Vive or Oculus, but offer a better experience than the Samsung Gear VR.

That places it considerably above Cardboard, Googles current VR offering, but Android VR will also be powered by a connected smartphone. Rojas describes it as a standalone headset, suggesting that, unlike the Gear, it wont rely on the handsets display for a screen.

Google IO begins on Wednesday 18 May, so watch the site for more updates next week.
