AT&T, Ericsson, Intel, WB team up on 5G-powered mixed reality Batman experience

BatmanAT&T, Ericsson, Intel and Warner Bros. have teamed up to create a 5G-powered, location-based mixed reality experience featuring DC superhero Batman and one of his longest-running enemies, The Scarecrow. The experience will be unveiled at next week’s MWC event in Barcelona.

Through the use of 5G technology and edge computing, visitors to MWC will be able to see Batman defeat The Scarecrow in an immersive experience which combines both virtual and augmented reality.

“At Warner Bros., we look forward to continuing to explore the power of 5G to deliver high-quality location-based entertainment experiences to our fans,” said Justin Herz, EVP of digital product, Pplatform and strategy at Warner Bros. Entertainment. “It is by working closely with partners who are leaders in 5G that we can develop compelling immersive user experiences that will break through to a mass audience and bring our most iconic characters, such as DCs Batman and The Scarecrow, to life.”

The demo will run on a fully-integrated 5G network powered by Ericsson Radio Base Stations and enable by Intel Xeon Scalable processors and the Intel 5G Mobile Trial Platform. It builds on a proof-of-concept demo conducted by the group on the University of Southern California campus in December 2018, where students were able to experience context-aware, mixed reality experience.

“5G will change how we create and engage with entertainment, making it possible to virtually transport into new worlds of imagination and possibility,” said Barbara Roden, VP of network experiences at AT&T.
